They were exposed to massive amounts of cosmic radiation, and then their rocket crashed in Gabon in equatorial Africa. They grew to monstrous proportions, so misshapen they were built like tanks, but now too heavy to fly. They kill whatever they can catch and leave it to rot, as they prefer their meals squishy.
